Surrealism is art that makes no sense, it is ideas of the subconscious mind that show dreams and/or subliminal thoughts. Dorothea Tanning is a 19th century surrealist who had an interest in art from a very early age. Her surrealism career began when she moved from her birthplace (Chicago), to New York. Here she met an art dealer named Julien Levy. This was a very significant part of her life as it was here that she met the art dealer’s surrealist friends who gave her an interest in surrealism. One day a man named Max Earnst (her later husband) came to her art studio and saw her work. She stayed with him and traveled to Arizona, where she stayed for thirty-four years making many surrealist works such as ‘Interior With Sudden Joy’, ‘Far From’ and ‘Tamerlane’ before moving with him to France. Unfortunately, it was here Max Earnst died and it left Dorothea Tanning in a great sorrow. She soon moved back to America where she pursued a career in literature. She died January 31, 2012. Dorothea Tanning was an impressive artist, that was effected by surrealism more than she effected surrealism.
