Subjective Frame:
The surrealist work ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ uses the elements of art tone and colour to convey themes of darkness and light. The sunflower is a light piece of the work, and has been placed because it is a very difficult flower to grow and care for but a beautiful sight. It is both a piece of annoyance and joy to its caretaker. Tone and colour is showcased in the sunflower in the colour of the flower is magnificent and bright, however it is missing petals and the stem is a shadowy, sickly green. In my opinion, this work is showing that many things can start the same way, like sunflower seeds being planted, but their outcomes are influenced greatly by what environment they are in, it takes a certain gardener to grow a sunflower without it dying. It is unnerving to me. It feels dark, the wall is cracked, the girls hair upside down and the doll leaning against the door frame looks disheveled. It is quite otherworldly and leads me down many different paths of thought. In conclusion, this work uses colour and tone to convey themes of darkness and light.
Structural Frame:
The artwork ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ is a surrealist work by Dorothea Tanning made in 1943. Its medium is oil on canvas and it uses multiple elements and principles of art including tone and movement. Tone is used in the doors, which look like they are molding and give an eerie feel, and movement is used where the girl’s hair looks like it has been blown up by some supernatural force. Victoria Carruthers once quoted about this work ‘At night one imagines all sorts of happenings in the shadows of the darkness. […] But these unknown forces are a projection of our own imaginations: our own private nightmares.’ This is an accurate description about what is happening. Dorothea Tanning shows a young girl and a doll with tattered clothing, one looking frozen in fear and the doll looking like she has already given up. It is a representation of what would happen to us if our nightmares came to life, Furthermore, the artwork is 16 x 1/8 x 24 in. In conclusion, Dorothea Tanning uses tone and movement to give the audience an eerie feeling.
